"Yet Another Java Developers Journal" Grammar/punctuation rant

posted Wednesday, 16-Jun-2004
Recently, Alan posted Yet Another Java Developers Journal, bemoaning the lack of print magazines for the Java programmer community. I have some minor gripes with his content, but I also have to wonder if he proof-read his magazine as badly as his own blog. Samples from that particular entry:

I was honored ... of being put in charge ...

"honored of"? "honored at", perhaps?

"thats way we've always done it"

"that's the way"

My competition, or yard stick lets say

"let's say"

JavaPro I never really seen as a serious

"never really saw" or "I've never really seen"

You never seen a JavaPro editor engaged

"You never saw" or "You've never seen"

I have now seen them as conferences chairing panels etc and its good to see.

"I have now seen them at conferences, chairing panels, etc, and it's good to see." Arguably "etc.,", but usages vary.

the best people to morph into print is one of the large online communities

"... are one of ..."? "The best group of people ... is one of ... "?

There is probably a good reason why there is only 2 Java magazines in the space

"... there are only ..."

Thats not good for any title.

"that's"

And the one that put my teeth so on edge that I had to write all this:

I have been left JDJ for nearly 7 months now
"I have been away from JDJ" or "I left JDJ nearly 7 months ago now"

As for my minor gripes about what he actually wrote about, as opposed to the syntax of his post: I suspect Sun doesn't support any one magazine because it doesn't want to seem to favor one over the other. I suppose I agree with his point that they could at least advertise.
